Re: Seems absolutely obvious to me - she was tricking Sammael.

She would never have shown him her real hideout. The "palace" clearly isn't Natrin's Barrow, but that does NOT indicate that she wasn't at Natrin's Barrow in any way. The other palace was just a ruse to fool Sammael (and perhaps Ituralde as well).
Plus your point about Compulsion actually verifies Graendal's presence - who else could weave such complex Compulsion on Ramshalan? It may not have been subtle but it was clearly complex enough to shock Nynaeve.

I doubt that's really likely. He swung in for visits a little too often for her to have been able to pull it off, not to mention her own thoughts when here match the description of the palace Sammael visted:
ACoS
Spears
She opened a gateway to her palace in Arad Doman, to the long columned room where she could see her pets frolicking in the pool.
As for the Compulsion, note that it's different than the Compulsion on Kerb. Who's to say one of her many slaves isn't a Channeler that she taught to impersonate her?
Domani Drag Queen in the White Tower ... Aran'gar watch out!
Additional clues that something doesn't quite add up in Graendal's death

Or it could be due to two different authors writing the story and nothing else. *NM*
