Quite simply, the two terms aren't that close: in the case of "largely forgotten", few people remember or have this knowledge while "well known" implies that many people know of the discussed topic.

There is very little convergence between common knowledge and something falling into the category of esoteric knowledge.

For example, the code names of the Forsaken are well known, but their real names are largely forgotten.
