In the beginning of the series, Gawyn and Galad seemed pretty obvious: Galad was the pretty boy who could do no wrong- Everyone was going to love him, and I was going to hate him for his stupid clicheness. Gawyn was going to be the dark horse, the one who was just as dangerous but also had a sarcastic remark, and was always overlooked in favor of his half-brother (whom he loved). I was going to enjoy Gawyn being awesome once he Took a Level in Badass.


And RJ (or Sanderson, or both)... completely flipped it. Galad has actually become a conflicted, complex character- wants to be pure white in a world where there is no more black and white morality (other than the Forsaken, but most of them are mere comic-book supervillians at this point).

Whereas Gawyn Took a Level in Whining Cliche. Wahh, his mom died (because he immediately believed a rumor he heard, despite those he loves and trusts- Egwene and Elayne- telling him otherwise). Wahh, he was pining over a girl who never looked at him, then suddenly did. Wahh, he's fighting for a side he doesn't believe in. Oh look, your girl is busy trying to become leader of the entire White Tower, sorry she doesn't have time for you.

Gawyn is SUCH a cliche romantic-hero lead that it just has to be deliberate.




So yeah, I like Galad's character arc- it's just that we've seen so little of it, it's hard to give it too much credit. Still, I approve.
