Re: Umbridge, Mr Weasley, Percy, Phineas Nigellus, Ron and the second trio

The note about punishing Harry is a very good (by which I mean thoroughly creepy) touch. Does anyone else get the impression that she is not a pureblood? Many of the most zealous people among the bad guys have turned out to be half-blood (Voldemort and Snape come to mind, I am sure there are others), and her lie about the locket being a family heirloom tying her to a pureblood family. It just sounds off.
Definitely. I remember we already theorized that in book five, that she was trying too hard, and this only confirms it further.
Ah, I don't remember that, but I have no doubt you are right.
Ron: I want to kill him at one point. He really is the most horribly spoilt brat. Yes, there is a redeeming context in his worry for his family, but his complete disregard for the feelings of those around him, and his lack of attention to the fact that Harry and Hermione are not eating or sleeping any better than he is….
I think we're going to have to conclude that Ron has a particular susceptibility to a number of magical behaviour-modifying phenomena: Veela's, the locket, and I think there might be more examples of him reacting stronger to such things than his friends.
True. I wonder whether that is down to the literary requirement of having a ... fall guy? comic relief? ... or whether it is something else.
Added to that of course is his insecurity as youngest of six sons whose best friend is the most famous teenager in the country, and all the issues that entails. His behaviour isn't really excusable, but understandable to some extent. But yes, part of it is him being an ass.
Yes.
Ginny and Neville and Luna: I like the moment of insight into what is going on at Hogwarts, and how these three are the ones at the heart of the resistance. I wonder why they wanted to steal the sword. I think it comes up later, but I cannot remember whether it was because of a sense of Gryffindor pride, the knowledge of Dumbledore's will or something else entirely.
Yeah, I think Ginny does explain eventually, but I don't remember either.
I rather like the goblins and their moral ambiguity. Nicely done on Rowling's part to not do like so many fantasy authors and go all "since we're forced to ally against the bad guy, we'll all be nice and noble to each other even though we've had issues with each other for forever".
I agree. Rowling avoids a number of the easy clichés of fantasy fiction. I like it.
