Although I get the feeling it's more than just that. Voldemort seems to trust Snape almost implicitly. And Snape is seated at Voldy's right hand in the first chapter. That's definitely not without significance.

True. Although that is now, after he has killed Dumbledore. And remained (apparently) faithful to Voldemort's command during the latter's absence.

Do you remember if we get to see more of the Snape of Voldy Past later in the book? That would help.
