My guess is that it comes from that desire to see justice done. And in this case, it actually was... the girl didn't get to take her date to the prom, but neither did anyone else. Homosexuals and Heterosexuals alike got shafted.

Where I object is when you make the case that the girl should have just accepted the status quo rather than confront the school board on their previous ruling. I'll refer you to Martin Luther King JR's letter from Birmingham Jail on that one, he said it a lot better than I could.
