See above. Process and procedures to change rules exist for a reason as well.;) I don't care much about the tuxedo/cross-dressing argument, but I do care that the school claimed that canceling the prom would be less disruptive to education than allowing a same-sex couple to attend together. If they want the rules, they should stand up for the rules on their own merits. If they are good rules, they will be easily supportable (as some of the points you listed above), but if they don't stand up well when they come up against real discussion, well then...

No, it would be less disruptive than dealing with a court battle. Either way they stood up for the rules. This way was merely cheaper.

Maybe the prom isn't important enough for them to have to go through the hassle and costs of a court battle in order to host it by their own rules. You seem to think there are only two options...give in to strong-arming and discard the rules to avoid court battles or fight tooth and nail. Neither is something the school wanted to do. They took the third option of getting rid of the whole headache. Not pleasant for those caught in the crossfire, but certainly understandable from their point of view.

Instead, it was a cop out decision, and puts immense weight onto a teenager's shoulders. Good thing she's almost ready to graduate- some of those kids would make her life hell.

It wasn't necessarily a cop-out, it was apparently the best option they had, given the situation, and they took it. Do you think they have endless resources for court battles just lying around? If not, do you think they should have to just give in whenever someone decided to use the courts to force them to change policies?

As for her, she doesn't get much sympathy from me. She tried to use the courts to change things to her specifications, the school pushed back, and now the prom is canceled. She ruined it for everybody because she couldn't have her way. No, it wasn't intentional, but it happened because she didn't think the potential consequences of her crusade through before embarking on it. While I can see the students being angry with the school, I can also understand them being angry with her. Maybe being in the hotseat with her classmates will get her to think things through next time. It's always good to think about the people who could get caught in the crossfire before embarking on any crusade. She didn't, and those people are now angry with her. Life lesson.
