I think comparing Egwene to McCain is asking for trouble on several fronts.

Anyone who strongly likes the one and dislikes the other will probably resent that analgoy, and anyone who dislikes both will say it's justified.
Without getting into THAT, she could be in a great position to be The Great Unifier, except I think she's going to blow it by being bullheaded with Rand when both the Pattern and RJ are on his side. At this point he almost IS an UNSTOPPABLE JUGGERNAUT, and she seems more likely to be doing exactly what Rand has envisioned for her with the Westlands armies: Unified and consolidated virtually all the groups he hasn't been able to get to directly or otherwise so that he can just step in and take the reins.
She's got good charisma and adaptability, and she made the right decisions to restore the Tower to a degree of integrity and strength it hasn't had since long before Elaida usurped Siuans place. She's been right and steadfast in her convictions when everyone else was unanimously against her, and that's averted disaster numerous times. No Aes Sedai would dare gainsay her at this point; every one whose tried has ended up either falling in line or ruined forever, and those who remain, from both the Usurper Tower and the Tower in Exile, are unanimously behind her.
Unfortunately, she's just as defiantly wrong about the Seals, and unless SHE falls in line soon she's going to be publicly and spectacularly so. All her hard patient work in building a very real power base among various Aes Sedai and other channeling factions desperate for a leader will do her no good if she plummets to earth. That simply leaves a power vacuum into which Rand can step without a pause, but perhaps that's the point.
MY point is that just because someone goes from "maverick" to "party man" and back to "maverick" all in less than a year doesn't mean they aren't a good leader so long as they do it for sincere and legitimate reasons, though of course if they're simply changing their public positions like a weathervane in a twister to GAIN leadership it means exactly that.

Egwene isn't supposed to be a leader. She's a dictator and a politician.
