The best way for Graendal to convince Rand that she is not there is send the man away without Compulsion. She sent him away covered in weaves. It was like a giant sign in the sky and not her plan at all. There's no way she could have known that Rand was right outside her palace waiting. If she'd set her weaves to unravel, the lord's sudden change in personality would have baited Rand even more. None of it makes any logical sense.
Why couldn't she anticipate it? If she was as great a master of psychology as purported I don't know why she couldn't.
Now I don't think that this is what happened, but it's the only way I see that Graendal could have escaped this trap.
When the Wolf King carries the hammer, thus are the final days known. When the fox marries the raven, and the trumpets of battle are blown.
Graendal's death would imply a major logical flaw in the story.
