People target Egwene because she's normal and generally not charming as a person. Rand gets away with everything because he's the future of humanity. Mat gambles, is cool and sleeps with tons of women etc. Egwene just gets on with her life - she's responsible and faces the world's realities like an adult. Obviously she then earns the ire of every fantasy reader, whose chief goal is to escape from reality.


Maybe it's baggage from their earlier books, she became important and had her "cool" scenes relatively late for one of the main characters, by the time she was raised Amyrlin, Rand was already known as tDR, Perrin was running the TR, Mat had the Band, Nynaeve had kicked Moghedien's ass twice, and Elayne was the Daughter-Heir and was learning how to make ter'angreal.

Egwene in the same period had been made damane and was learning about her dream abilities, but she had a lot of annoying moments in the early books. She didn't appear at all in WH. Many of her best moments were really in the last two books. Then take into account how much new books have been spaced out ever since LoC, and a lot of negative opinions of her I guess just petrified.

She's just one of the characters some readers don't like at all. A lot of people hate Faile, I can't stand Elayne, and Egwene has her share of anti-fans.
