Elaida thought that Egwene would "lose face" in front of the senior Aes Sedai by meekly doing whatever was necessary to protect herself. Once Egwene realized that Elaida meant to have her undermine herself in front of the assembly, she thought to herself that this was the time when she had to speak the truth to Elaida, no matter what the cost to her, and when she is seized at the end of this scene, she thinks that this might be the end for her (we readers knew that this wasn't the case, though).
