More inevitable than anything, considering who started Komen. Joel Send a noteboard - 02/02/2012 10:19:34 PM
If people really want to be offended though they should be offended by the fact that we spend twice the much money on breast cancer research as we do on prostate cancer even though close to the same number of people die from both. But that is another debate of course.

Is it? In a way, I think that is THE issue here:

The core issue is whether Americans should spend money empowering people when some will use that empowerment in ways those funding it dislike.

That is bigger than Komen (gee, an organization created and run by a politician got political; what are the odds?) or Planned Parenthood. Neither were factors in the SC GOP primary, but abortion coverage by the (supposedly) taxpayer funded MA healthcare law written by (supposedly) Pro Life Gov. Romney was pivotal.

We must not spend public funds ensuring everyone education, because they will learn about evolution.

We must not spend public funds ensuring everyone sex education, because they will learn about condoms (or even abortion.)

We must not spend public funds fighting an African AIDS epidemic killing tens of millions, because that would include sex education, and thus the above objections.

We must not spend public funds ensuring all children health insurance, because some people will use it to become welfare queens instead of getting a job.

And, of course, we must not spend money on public healthcare, because some people will have abortions.

The Komen Foundation (rechristened a few years ago as "Race for the Cure," as if only one fatal disease requires a cure) is only a tiny aspect of that. It is a private organization free to pick and choose which healthcare to endorse OR OPPOSE. The more it deviates from general healthcare advocacy to take sides in the "culture wars" the more its healthcare advocacy will suffer, but it is free to make that choice. In some ways that would make more sense than an all male NFL more concerned with breast cancer than with prostate cancer (though men are not immune to breast cancer.)

The deeper issue this highlights is whether people should make accepting their entire political agenda a condition of aid for vital needs. Your aunt had the luxury of loving Komen and hating Planned Parenthood (even if that luxury rested, until now, entirely on ignorance.) Komen has the same luxury, because they explicitly made breast cancer their sole priority. The healthcare profession lacks that luxury, just as educators cannot avoid teaching facts those funding them dislike.

If we sincerely wish to empower people to live freely, we must do just that, knowing "freedom" includes freedom to make choices we dislike. I am not optimistic most Americans will soon realize, let alone accept, that, since we routinely endorse toppling whole governments if their citizens "vote wrong" in free elections.
