ACKSON, Miss. - An 18-year-old Mississippi lesbian student whose school district canceled her senior prom rather than allow her to escort her girlfriend and wear a tuxedo said she got some unfriendly looks from classmates when she reluctantly returned to campus Thursday.
No problem with the school imposing a dress code on the prom - While I have a degree of sympathy for the girl, there clearly are accepted limits on the dress code which seems reasonable to me - I wouldn't have much time for someone who complained that they didn't get to go dressed as Jonny Rotten, as an example.
Though I suppose a tux isn't as far out as that example by a long way.
Not letting her take her girlfriend is something I don't agree with the school on. Either you are allowed to take a date with you or you aren't - seems deeply unfair to me to say you can only take a date if your choice of date isn't the same gender as you and if they are you have to go alone.

It kind of makes sense, given the highly arbitrary and stereotypical nature of gender.
