Fionwe brings up a good point of Egwene's potential. The Mesaana quote is nearly a year after the Moghedien quote. It's easily possible that Egwene has grown in strength in the mean time.

As for the TAR battle... Egwene ran her ass off for several reasons. The first is that you don't want to face a superior force when you've been caught by surprise. She's right in thinking she wouldn't dare face the woman's strength under those circumstances!

But also note that minutes later she's setting a plan in motion to draw the woman out for a fight under her own circumstances. Just as her earlier comment to Gawyn indicates, if SHE can confront Mesaana she can defeat her. Certainly she'd want the circumstances as much under her control as possible.

As to Shielding. It's not the best indicator in the world, but it is always a direct indicator when both parties are holding the Source. Being caught off guard anyone can shield anyone else, the Mylen/Sheraine example is one such!
