I don't think so. He could have done any number of things. You are just refusing to see the alternatives because you want to take the easy way out, as he did.
This might have been a job for a channeler with subterfuge and good intelligence like Cadsuane and her cadre to manage rather than Rand.
But, as I said in my initial post, I think indulging in mass murder is not something I'll ever reward with fan-support regardless of who does and regardless of who is killed. If you win by sacrificing everything you believe in, it becomes a pyrrhic victory, and I think this had the potential to become that.
