He probably has some massive daddy/older stepbrother issues which mean that he is constantly hit by a sense of duty to avenge his mother, despite reality telling him otherwise.

Yes, this is irritating and ridiculous, but was Rand's fear of killing female FS and darkfriends any more so? He too knew that if he failed, then the DO would win, but until recently he was unable to accept that sacrifices had to be made. Of course, as we've seen, he only needs to accept it, not embrace it.
