Librarians tend to have a different understanding of fact and history than the general public. And you're using Sammael's POV too - he has a different idea of what "well known" is. It might be a "well known" fortress to military figures, but less well known to the general population. Of course, Sammael thinks in terms of the military so that colours his comments.
Alternatively, he might mean that the area is well known, but the fact that it is still used might have been what was forgotten.
