This isn't the first time this type of prom story has happened, and I'm sure it won't be the last. But at least some of them have had headlines like "Gay Couple Turned Away From Door At Prom." She was likely covering her bases, because she knew she lived in a bigoted area (or at least, in a bigoted school district)
