Yes, I realize "you must wear some type of clothing, you may not wander around naked" is technically a dress code, but that's... silly. Semantics.

All I know is that, in my personal experience, I've never been so tied up in what I was wearing that I suddenly worked extra hard because I had a useless scrap of silk around my neck, or just decided not to do work because I was wearing sweatpants.

It mostly bugs me because the whole thing is so arbitrary, and taken very seriously by... well, people like you, it would seem. Hats used to be a must for a gentleman, though you'd take it off inside, or in the presence of a lady, or any other number of bits of trivia.

Now, hats are much rarer- yet some people would still silently judge you for wearing a hat indoors.

Honestly, why would you even care what someone else is wearing? It's so meaningless.

In one set of replies you say dress codes are meaningless, then you title this one by saying "Pshhh there's a difference between "wear SOME clothes" and "wear a tux""... which one is it? Dress codes are meaningless or there's a difference implying that dress codes have meaning?
