Countries like my native Belgium that are (or were) nearly 100% Catholic while simultaneously espousing or at least tolerating lots of things that go against Catholic teachings have a long and honoured tradition in it, as do/did most of the Islamic and Christian states (as in, states with no real religious freedom) now and in the past. Tends to make things nicer for everyone than big principled stands, in many situations.
