So looking into it, they can direct the FBI to do another background check digging into the claims, though from what I've read, it seems there were more witnesses and the like to be able to check with for Clarence Thomas than with the current first allegation.
Not true. There's Mark Judge, who Dr. Blasey alleges was in the room, and who has flipped his story once already, and who has admitted to being blackout drunk often during his high school days. He can and should be asked questions under the penalty of perjury.
But it doesn't have to take long. The only thing the FBI can do is conduct interviews. There's no forensic evidence to find. It isn't like this will take months!
The political reason for not wanting an attempted rapist on the court? Sure. But there's nothing else. There's no reason the FBI investigation has to go very long at all.
It isn't that simple. Dr. Blasey would be making her statement to the FBI under penalty of perjury, as would anyone else supporting her story, like her husband or her therapist. It becomes much harder to believe they're politically motivated if they are willing to do that. It also means the FBI will be looking to check if this was a politically motivated accusation, and if they're confident it is not, being willing to be investigated, again, under the penalty of perjury, says a lot for the credibility of her accusation.
That really isn't true. There is no reason any FBI investigation on this issue would take very long. Their job will consist of taking statements, not combing through houses for forensic evidence.
Impeachment. However, there IS the fact that Maryland has no statute of limitations for the crime Dr. Blasey alleges. I have no idea what happens if Montgomery County PD opens a case, as they've said they're willing to. A sitting Supreme Court judge being questioned, and possibly arrested and convicted? I have no idea what that does, but it certainly legitimizes the court. That there's such a simple way to avoid it which the GOP will not take is really awful.
