it always helps if they've a respectable age and have been believed in a good long while, so people have gotten used to them a bit. That said, even though the LDS church is, what, over a century and a half old, I have a hard time taking Mormon literalism more seriously than, well, Scientology literalism.

Scientology is like the Church of the Sub-Genius: Someone decided to start a joke religion with the explicit purpose of making money; the difference is that scientology somehow managed to be taken seriously. Guess Hubbard won his bet with Asimov/Le Guin/Campbell/any of the other individuals MANY people have stated Hubbard bet he could start a fake religion and get people to believe in it. Depending on ones perspective, that is evidence that either spirituality or credulity (possibly both) are integral to humanity.
