Oh, there were definitely competing views, just not competing Christian views. Joel Send a noteboard - 07/10/2011 09:26:22 PM
I'm not saying Arianism (yeah, that sounds familiar) is more true, just that there was no universal agreement. And it wasn't just those 2 positions either. So it's possible, IMO, to be a non-Nicene Christian.

I can see the appeal of many of those views to new Christians not yet familiar with the details of the faith they have only begun to explore. They are not competing Christian views, but competing views to which an eager but largely ignorant Christian uncertainly exploring their faith is very susceptible. In that state I briefly adopted both Nestorian view and Monophysite views on my own, precisely because I WAS largely on my own: I knew no better, but that could not remain so unless I ceased examining and exploring my faith. Further consideration, prayer and biblical study demonstrated how incompatible those positions are with Christianitys foundational elements. The fellowship and ministry of others certainly helped, and the Grace of almighty God did not hurt either. That is the reason the Council of Nicaea felt obligated, even called, to clarify and codify Christology and eliminate the mortal threats confronting early Christians at every turn.

But yeah, we interpret things very differently, so you may not agree :P.

So long as it is only interpretation reasonable men can differ--but we must be sure we do interpret, not just absorb, or we follow carnal men rather than holy God.
