Your premise ignores the issue of "tyranny of the masses".
To be axiomic, that which expands rights under the law is just: that which does not, is injust. Within the legal strictures and priviledges of marriage, what does it matter whether or not the two people are the same sex or not? Our legal and cultural foundations may by inspired by Christian values, but we're not a theocracy. Same-sex marriages couldn't possibly do more to "defile the sanctity of marriage" than how marriage is treated in this country by opposite-sex marriagess (50% divorce rate, anyone?). Not to mention that throughout history marriage has predominantly been for economic bonds, political pacts, financial gain (which is still so common that we colloquially refer to it as "gold-digging" ), etc... hardly building a tradition of sanctity you claim to be supporting.
