The statement that Rand's victory will be as dark as defeat probably meant that Rand in his mentally deranged state (before Dragonmount and 'veins of gold'
could not completely rid the world of evil. Even if 'hard as cuendillar' Rand won over the DO, it would be at a great price, both in lives as well as maybe Rand himself turning to the Dark.
