We still got half a book. No Jon Snow, no Dany, no Tyrion. Let's face it, any book without the Wall and the North is just...robbed of its Song of Ice and Fire-ness.
The simple fact is that I'm just not all that interested in the Martin series after A Feast for Crows and the extraordinarily long lag between books, which for a series is not good.
Martin doesn't have an obligation to get the books out, but as he drags this out the readers have less interest in buying them. Sales for games and related merchandise will drop as well.
Of course, he might get the next book out before Brandon Sanderson finishes the Jordan series and it might be great. Right about now, though, there are a lot of disillusioned fans losing interest. It doesn't matter what the books were "technically" always going to be called.
