Of course you can. Any scientist worth their salt will do exactly that. You can't have a trend when an outlier of this size exists. It isn't like Androl is slightly weaker than Rand but makes a Gateway as large as him. He's pretty much rock bottom as far as strength goes (can't even make a rock explode), but is able to match Rand's Gateway with ease. The moment you have a confirmed outlier like that, you have to toss your trend in the garbage, and realize that what you saw was a correlation, not causation.
And correlation is perfectly find. It's been demonstrated that strength and gateways correlate for so long, I can't believe its even a debate. The world's strongest man also has the largest gateways, and the Forsaken we've seen create larger gateways aren't far behind. Compare this to the fact that no weak channelers can Travel and strong Aes Sedai can. No one has claimed that its a directly linear relationship - some Aes Sedai can make a gateway that their hand can fit through and with some extra strength its suddenly big enough for a whole person. I love how you two would see a large gateway and assume that the channeler is not necessarily strong. It's totally true that it may be Androl weaving the gateway, but any betting man would point and say 'hey that must be a strong channeler.'... and they'd be right.
For example, Talent in Gateways could also be a bell curve distribution with Androl at the very highest possible level. Since most channelers will be clustered around mid-level skill, and their strength will also be more likely to be mid-level, there will likely be a correlation between Gateway size and strength in the OP among them. To a casual observer (which is what Logain is), it would seem that greater OP strength causes greater Gateway sizes (especially since they aren't actually measuring either, differences between same strength channelers due to Talent will be easy to miss, near median strength and Talent). Nevertheless, the actual relationship is different. Your Gateway size is some kind of function of your strength and Talent level.
And I have maintained from the beginning that Talent is definitely the most powerful factor, it's just probably not all that present in channelers. It's probably the weave that correlates with strength the most. If you have Talent you jump up, if not, your gateway is smaller.
First of all, we have seen no example of Semirhage working the weather. Asmodean says she has almost no ability there. Secondly, your Moiraine point only disproves what you say below. Yes, with an angreal Moiraine can Heal more, but she would have not been able to Heal at all if she had zero Talent.
No that's incorrect. The weave has to work if you weave it. Its your inability to modulate the weave that makes you weak. And because I think strong channelers seem to have a greater affinity with the Power, its probable that they are more likely to be able to modulate weaves. We've never seen an Aes Sedai who can't Heal. That isn't proof that everyone has Talent to some degree. It's proof that most people don't have Talent and it still works.
On the other hand, someone like Sheriam with almost zero Healing ability can be given the Choedan Kal and she'd still probably not match Moiraine.
I have never said she would, but with the CK she would still Heal better than unaided.
As rare as Androl is, there's probably an equally rare man who is very strong but cannot make a Gateway at all because he's so lacking in the Talent.
I only half-agree. I think a strong male with a weak Talent would probably make a marginally smaller gateway than someone of equal strength. And even then, I'm not so sure - he might be able to 'waste' more saidin making it large.
Want proof? Look at Aviendha. Due to the second learned weave limitation, which is something that impacts skill, she needs to use way more of her strength to create a Gateway compared to Elayne. Thus, she is indeed using her strength to overcome lack of Talent.
And this is my belief with most weaves. You can probably Heal better if you pick up an angreal. That doesn't mean you're going to be as good as Nynaeve, but maybe you'll struggle less.
However, in her case, we actually know she can fix that. If she improves her Talent (remembers how she first made the weave), she'll automatically make much bigger Gateways with much less of the OP.
But its debatable if that is even Talent. Talent is innate ability, not practiced ability. Most people can probably improve their skills in all weaves with practice, doesn't mean their Talent is improving.
What's more, she says her Gateway size would increase even with the reduced OP being directed into it. Right there, you can see what's happening. A Talent is basically streamlining a process, making it more efficient. Its more effective utilization of resources (OP strength).
Inborn ability vs Practice... it's a different debate.
Which means Androl isn't some weird outlier. He's just the most highly efficient in the creation of this weave, and others fall behind him by varying amounts. OP strength is thus not irrelevant, but is only partially responsible for Gateway size.
And I've said since the beginning that strength is partially responsible, but its predictable enough for channelers to gauge strength. Rand has been speaking of Dedicated strong enough to make gateways to let a cart through for ages. He even mentions how some men have jumped in strength and that their gateways are larger.
Prove this please. Show me someone with very low Talent but very great strength simply managing to achieve the same results.
Sure - show me a strong channeler who has ever said they cannot do something with the Power. I'm not talking about performing a great feat or saying that they're pathetic with the weave. Show me inability. Show me 'Egwene stood back. I cannot perform this because I have no Talent.' There isn't. They can get by even if its sometimes tough.
Are you claiming that with a sa'angreal, Nynaeve or Egwene could start making cuendillar?
Egwene is very Talented with cuendillar so I don't understand your point. But take Verin who perhaps struggles or cannot make cuendillar and if you give her a sa'angreal she might be able to. Verin herself used an angreal to make Compulsion easier on a woman.
And with Egwene's remarkable strength, you would think she would have done a better job Healing Gawyn. She could barely close his wounds, and she was even using Nynaeve's new weaves.
So? You're missing my point. I claimed she could Heal, which she can. You're twisting my words to make it seem like every person with a sa'angreal or high strength can do anything with the Power to any degree. I never said that.
He's extremely strong. How does this prove your point?
So what are you saying... that extreme strength means he obviously can Heal? That's my claim.
Except this is patently not true. We don't see Sharina working at it, for example, even though she could have thrown a lot more strength at it than Leanne. And Tiana says straight out that the weave requires very little of the OP. That's why even Novices are able to do it with ease.
Sharina not being in the tent means nothing. But I do believe that she probably can make cuendillar because she is so powerful, maybe not nearly like Egwene but she could probably do most things even if weakly.
You know this is true for all of them? How?
And what exactly can we say about any channeler if we have to sample the entire population? When Siuan got a sa'angreal she could suddenly Travel. And no, I don't know if this will apply to the other 1000 women in the series, but I'm pretty sure it does.
And that proves Darius's point. The question is not can you Heal/Travel at all. Its how well you can do it. Gateway size is a sign of how well you can Travel (not the only sign). You're saying it is purely strength based. Which means every strong channeler near Rand's strength can make a Gateway around as big as his. But as you said, a strong channeler with weak Talent will only be weak with the ability. Yet, Logain doesn't take this into account at all.
I've never said its purely strength ever. Logain respects the most likely explanation. "You're 8 foot tall, you must have bigger feet than me". Could he be wrong? Sure.
Really? One in a thousand with a Talent that has been called a Talent all the while?
A Talent endemic in strong channelers...
Nope. He'd be totally wrong about causation, and if he does a careful study, he'll definitely find inconsistencies. There'll probably be any number of cases where two Asha'man of the same strength won't have exactly equal Gateways. But Logain doesn't measure those with a tape measure, so he assumes they're the same. Every time a true anomaly comes by, he just ascribes it to unique Talent. But that's plain bad science.
Honestly... who cares if there are flaws? A careful study?... you're too scientific. There are always outliers in nature and maybe you are correct that people of different strength don't have the same gateway - we don't know. As I said, correlation is perfectly fine. Logain knows that a bigger gateway than his is surely a sign of higher strength. A Talent is probably uncommon.
Incidentally Androl's gateway is not bigger than Rand's... I don't know who brought that up. It can fit a cart, and many Asha'man can duplicate this. Many men can make larger gateways, which proves that Androl is limited by his strength. I'd be interested to see what he can do with an angreal - and it's obvious... it will be as big as Rand's because that is the upper limit for one man.
