I think it lies in the description. Especially of female gateways. Egwene makes the pattern the "same" in order to open a gate. That would make everything at that boundary the "same" including air pressure. With the male way Rand is still pinching two locations together. Forcing them to share the "same" space so to speak. When he bores his hole there I'm sure he is dominating what is happening in that sliver of space.
