But why only them? Fanatic-Templar Send a noteboard - 30/03/2010 08:07:00 AM
It seems counter to what you'd expect from their culture. Not only because as a military nation on the Blightborder, I wouldn't expect them to have the time to indulge in purely academic studies such as the use of a dead language, but from what I gather of Shienaran art and that poem Lan and Agelmar appreciated, they seem to favour the beauty of the ephemeral, rather than the enduring classics which would favour hanging on to the ancient things.

Maybe random words and phrases are part of their natural lexicon, much like modern English uses occasional bits of Latin.

English uses occasional bits of Latin, but so does French, and I assume many other languages that were developed in regions controlled by the Roman Empire. If that were it, then we could expect this sort of thing to be common throughout the Westlands, but it isn't. So why did such archaisms remain in use in Shienar (or the Borderlands in general) and not elsewhere, as one would assume to be the case? If anything, I'd expect Tar Valoners to have numerous Old Tongue idioms, what with living in the shadow of the highly conservative White Tower (and where many Aes Sedai do actually know the Old Tongue).
