and yet the reviewer has completely missed the soul of the series. Sure you can pick apart areas of weak writing, and a penchant for rambling that RJ had, but the reviewer has also completely missed that any one of the army of fans out there could quiet possible tell you more about the history of WOT and it's world leaders than most high school kids could tell you about the real world they live in.
I'm not sure I'm explaining it all that well, but I find it charming that a WOT reader knows enough about this world to talk about Political alliances amongst Ajahs in the Tower, or that the women in Ebou Dar wear dresses with oval cut outs to show their marriage knife, and what the various gems in that knife represent etc... I like that we know what to expect of any given new character simply from hearing they are a Domani or a Cairheinin or from Far Madding.
There is a weight to RJs work that makes WOT feel real, a personalization he brings to each character and every town, a national and cultural identity for every person that we encounter along the way. I think all that detail makes WOT feel like a real place with real people, even when the specifics of the writing are overdone or seem to go nowhere, or could have been expedited with a few quick phrases rather than 3 chapters of descriptions.
I don't read WOT because I'm looking for well structured fiction, or a commentary on society. I read WOT because it's a nice little escape into a world that feels familiar and has a realness that I've not found in other fantasy... in fact WOT is the only fantasy I've read in decades.

Domani Drag Queen in the White Tower ... Aran'gar watch out!
