There are none so blind as those who will not see.
Pot? Hey!
I already gave you the link to the site. Contrary to AR's ego there is not a site dedicated to only his work. It has alot of other authors, including suprisingly enough Robert Jordan.
Oh, that. You mean a bunch of reader polls, I see. None in the past nine years as well. Wonderful. Didn't know that affected Roberts' ego, though. Projecting a bit?
This is my definition of accomplishment (from Webster):
1 : the act of accomplishing : completion
2 : something that has been accomplished : achievement
3 a : a quality or ability equipping one for society b : a special skill or ability acquired by training or practice
What is yours?
Well, if someone sets out to get a Ph.D. and does does so, that's an accomplishment. Same thing for having a book or multiple books and short fiction publication. I would imagine being well-regarded by many (not all, but by many) would be another accomplishment. Oh, and being up for awards where there are actual banquets and presentations and occasional media coverage would be another accomplishment.
And perhaps publishing works that aren't geared toward the perceived LCD might be an accomplishment as well?
Perhaps we are having difficulty comind to terms with "successful." There I believe we are going to have a serious gap because you seem to be implying that because AR was nominated (and only nominated) for a couple of awards then he is something special that grants him a free pass on doing a "review" that is nothing of the sort (His review is equivelent to a kindergartner on the playground in Georgia making fun of the way a New Yorker talks). Well my dad was nominated for an Emmy once, he didn't win. As the saying goes, that and $1 will get him a cup of coffee. Perhaps it is because he is a professor at *gasp* CAMBRIDGE that makes him so special. OK, lets examine his life shall we? He went to high school, he went to college, he went to college, he went to college, he teaches at college. He wrote a few books (that may or may not be readable, I have seen comments both ways but I will judge for myself the next time I go to the Library) but had meidccre market appeal. Hmmm, still waiting for something in there to reach out and grab me... RJ on the other hand, now that man lead a life... AR seems to aspire to being an author, RJ was a master storyteller.
You sure do read a lot into matters, don't you? I would merely reply that having established himself as a critic (again, have you read his non-fiction? Thought not.), I would be more apt to consider his point of view than I would consider, for example, yours. The rest of your semi-diatribe above seems to be a bit odd, to say the least. Are you trying to work up animosity ad hominem because the author/critic has a different experience reading the novels than you have had and that he expresses it in a more informal-than-norm-for-him review on his personal blog? Seems a bit strange, to be honest.
Oh, and as for the support you think you have in this thread for you view, I sugest you go back and actually look at the posts, I did. (ignoring you and I)There have been 7 different contributors that thought the "review" was nothing but snarky superficial crap, 3 who were ambivelent or partially agreed, and 3 that voiced agreement; though 1 of those had a change of opinion after the second "review"
I was pointing out that there was no unanimity of opinions. My point still stands.
I'm sorry to tell you, AR does not walk on water, if you look really closely I believe you will be able to see the snorkle.
I've read his works and reviews and disagree with elements of several of them. However, those differences of perspective offered me the chance to reevaluate my own takes. Did those change all or even most of the time? No, but it was a rewarding experience. This back and forth with someone who seems unwilling to admit that some of the issues that he raised might be valid ones to consider? Not so much.
Sorry that I'm slower in responding tonight, but I have a book to finish for a review on my blog, then I have to finish reading another lit journal for my editing job, then I have to send out a query letter. Might be slow in responding the next three days.
