The way that he references 'general myth/culture' makes it sound as though RJ only used parallels to the most common and overused sources, which I do think is unfair.

Or perhaps I think that there was more extensive use because of my own ignorance on the subject, I imagine. But whatever the case, I do not share this perspective.

Not that it really matters. The first time I read the series I got to Crossroads of Twilight and wasn't even aware that Ishamael had appeared in the story yet :P.


Rather, I think his point was that it was done in such a heavy-handed fashion at times that it didn't mesh too well with the narrative style of the first few volumes. At least, that's my take on the matter.

My first WoT book was CoS. Think about how that colored the subsequent reads of 1-6 :P
