I didn't rely on just wiki, should never singlesource :)

No, RJ's writing awards are not Hugo-class but they still exist and he did at least win for some. No watter how you slice it, RJ had a more "successful" carrer as an author than Roberts probably ever will (for that matter so has Mick and his first carrer was getting hit in the head by metal chairs 5 days a week so...). Congratulations to Roberts for being a professor at a prestigious university and producing a snarky sarcastic criticism of other ,more succesful, author's work.

Speaking of which, my favorite criticism that he has made so far against RJ's books, is the really insiteful one regarding the lack of graphic sex and violence. A professional college professor, criticising someone who actually served in a war about NOT depicting blood and guts... It is a good thing he has a day-job to fall back on.

As someone else said in a different portion of this thread "Those that can, do. Those that can't, teach."

Depends on how you define "successful." I've never made more than $42K/year and several years I've made much less. But the most successful moments I had were when I managed to get a severely autistic 6th grader to communicate with me and when a girl who had been raped repeatedly by her parents over 10 years managed to open up to me and laugh a bit during a job I held teaching at a residential treatment center (now closed, unfortunately). It may be that Roberts doesn't define his career by the number of books sold, but by how well he feels he has communicated within his stories.

As for the combat about the violence, etc., look again through those first three books. Roberts hasn't read 4-12. He's commenting on EotW, TGH, and TDR. Those books weren't exactly chock-full of graphic sex/violence. The ones that followed, while it treats those topics slightly different, aren't on the same level still as more recent epic fantasies.
