I think WH was my least favorite of the WoT novels I re-read Larry Send a noteboard - 21/05/2010 04:49:31 PM
I think WH gets probably too much praise based on the dubious premise it is better than PoD and CoT. Sure, it's much better than its two neighbours, but it's still a deeply flawed novel, most notably for the total lack of movement on the Perrin/Faile storyline, the disappointing and perfunctory depiction of the biggest, game-changing event so far in the series (the Cleansing) and the extremely pointless Far Madding storyline.

That said, Roberts is possibly too harsh. Whilst pointless to the overall narrative, the Far Madding storyline is started, unfolded and resolved within this one novel, as is Mat's quest to leave Ebou Dar (although that still should have been a three-chapter storyline at best). Combined with the Cleansing which, badly-depicted as it is, is nevertheless a major plot movement, you do have a book which is not completely inert. Also, by lambasting WH for its stasis, he's left himself with nowhere to go for the stationary CROSSROADS OF TWILIGHT next week.


But Roberts certainly wrote an amusing critique of that novel's weaknesses, several of which I had noticed when I re-read it a couple of weeks ago. I have this sense that we're approaching an anti-Tao moment when he writes his review of CoT next week :P
